There are three main ways to come from Marrakech to Zagora and visit the Sahara desert. Find out the best one for your travel to Morocco and download our free travel planner😃
Visiting the Sahara desert from Marrakech is a must if you are planning to stay in Morocco for at least 5 days. There are different ways to come from Marrakech to Zagora (the main village here in the desert) including car rental, private or shared excursions, bus or even helicopter.
OPTION 1 = CAR (FOR INDEPENDENT TRAVELERS)
If you are anything like me you may be used to create your own plans when traveling and one of the best ways to do it is to rent a car so you can drive anywhere you want and stop on your wish.
There are many rental companies offering cars from Marrakech, but although it may sound tempting, I would not pick up the car in the airport if you are planning to spend some days in the city. Why? Because during your visit in Marrakech you will not drive. Most of the attractive places to visit are inside the Medina and believe me when I tell you that you don’t want to drive in there.
– Firstly, streets are very narrow and moroccans drive like crazy, so it’s better not to join the party.
– Secondly, the most beautiful and amazing places in the city are the ones that you find when you get lost walking through its streets.
– Lastly, parking will not be an easy work…
So yes, the best is to rent the car when you decide to go out of Marrakech.
If you have doubts about what kind of car will you need, we recommend a 4×4 because is the only way to arrive to the high sand dunes. But if you are joining us in a trekking departing from Zagora or just want to sleep in a berber camp, you can rent a normal car for around 30€ per day to travel from Marrakech to Zagora.
OPTION 2 = PRIVATE DRIVER (FOR A RELAXED TRIP)
Another way to come from Marrakech to Zagora by car is with a private scoffer. If you don’t feel comfortable driving in foreign countries but still want to enjoy the facilities of an air conditioned car this is your best option. Prices use to be around 150€ per day, and most of the drivers own air conditioned 4×4 cars that can bring you directly to the high dunes.
Many companies do not offer private transport from Marrakech in their desert trips but with us it’s all included, so you don’t need to worry about finding your private driver online 🙂
OPTION 3 = BUS (FOR ADVENTURERS)
But if you are in a budget and can’t spend that much in a car, there’s another option. You can buy a bus ticket for around 15€ and join the locals. This is the most common transport for Moroccans, so it can be a good way to meet new people. There are two main companies offering different timetables: Supratours and CTM.
At the beginning we said you should come to Zagora if your travel is planned for at least 5 days, because no matter what transport option do you choose it will take you around 8 hours to come and 8 more to come back. Since the shortest experience you can have is to spend one night in a berber camp, it will take you two entire days to do so. Well… actually there is a fastest way: you can always rent an helicopter 😉
So now that you know all the options, don’t forget to download our free organizer for transport from Marrakech to Zagora here. We have also included information about the CTM and Supratours stations in case you decide to take Option 3 😃
PS: We have not talked about the shared excursions because we are not big fans of them. If you want to know further about it, I will soon write an article about my first experience in the desert of Morocco, meanwhile feel free to leave your comments bellow or email us at email@example.com with any doubts or concerns you may have.
